CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- An extremely intoxicated Fort Lauderdale man was seriously injured when he was hit by a car in Cape Coral Tuesday night.

It happened in the 2300 block of Del Prado Boulevard South around 8:30 p.m., near the Coralwood Shopping Mall.

According to Cape Coral Police, the victim and another pedestrian were crossing Del Prado on foot outside of a marked crosswalk.

That's when the driver of a car headed south saw an unidentified pedestrian dart in front of their vehicle.  The driver swerved left to avoid that pedestrian but instead hit the other pedestrian, who may have been texting on his phone at the time.

That man, a 51-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, was propelled into the car's windshield and then landed in the road.  He was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he is listed as in critical condition.

His name has not been released yet.

Toxicology reports revealed the pedestrian had a Blood Alcohol Concentration of .345.

The unidentified pedestrian that reportedly darted in front of the car fled the scene on foot.

There were no injuries in the car.
