CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A couple of residents have been leaving out trays of dog and human food for a runaway German Shepherd. Their intention to save the dog's life, is met with the fear of attracting coyotes to the area.

“Only us dog lovers are going to keep it feed to make sure it doesn't starve to death," said Lana Fields, one resident that has been leaving food out.

Fields lives near a large grass area on the corner 25th street and 26th court northwest, she says the food is left far enough away from the neighborhood to avoid any coyote dangers. In her opinion, the food is keeping wild animals from coming closer.

“I think it’s a win-win. If you feed it, it’s not going to come down here looking for your animals. It will eat… go away.”

According to Florida Administrative Code:

"Intentionally placing food or garbage, allowing the placement of food or garbage, or offering food or garbage in such a manner that it attracts coyotes, foxes or raccoons and in a manner that is likely to create or creates a public nuisance is prohibited."

John Mercurio, another Cape Coral resident, argues Fields' actions will bring even more coyotes to the area.

"Once they get a taste, they’ll keep coming back for more.”
