Collier County leaders want to ease traffic congestion on some of the county's busiest roads - by re-timing the traffic lights at 37 intersections. The timing updates would affect intersections along Airport-Pulling, Pine Ridge, Livingston and Vanderbilt Beach Roads. Tuesday, county commissioners approved an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation to get reimbursed $451,560 for the project.

"Catching the lights at the right time becomes a bit of an issue," said driver Diane Bell. She lives in Bonita Springs, but visits Naples frequently to visit her daughter and family.

"I think the re-timing of the traffic lights would be beneficial," Bell said.

Naples resident Ed Taylor, who just moved to the area, agrees.

"If there is something elected officials can do to improve (the traffic flow,) it's going to be great," Taylor said. "It's just going to help the community."

County staff estimates that re-timing all 37 traffic lights could take about a year, since they have to evaluate both seasonal and off-season traffic patterns.
