It was a bad morning to lose power.

As temperatures dropped below freezing in some parts of Southwest Florida, making Thursday not only the coldest morning of the season but the coldest morning in several years, power companies reported pre-dawn outages.

Florida Power and Light sent customers in Punta Gorda an email saying about 1,500 customers lost power around 6 a.m. By 10 a.m. the number was down to about 360 customers in the Bal Harbor Blvd. area, and fewer than 150 customers in Cleveland.

In Lee County, FPL reported more than 100 customers without power in a Fort Myers neighborhood near Summerlin Rd and John Morris Rd. And an additional 220 in the neighborhood around Fort Myers Memorial Gardens.

LCEC reported about 220 customers without power in North Fort Myers late Thursday morning. But a company spokesperson tells Fox 4 it was a typical night, and only about 200 of their 210,000 customers were without power.

Neither company could confirm the source of the outages, but representatives from both said they did not expect them to last long.
