Marco Island's city manager is under investigation for a battery complaint, after just over two months on the job. Lee Niblock took on the position December 5.
Marco Island Police Chief Al Schettino told city council members on February 8 that a city employee was accused of battery. A week later, Schettino emailed council members that the subject of the complaint was Niblock.
"We need to get to the bottom of it and understand the full extent of the facts," said Jared Grifoni, Marco Island's city council chairman. "It's been referred to the Collier County Sheriff's Office for an official investigation."
The details of the complaint are unclear, including the nature of the alleged incident and the identity of the complainant.
"At this point there's no indication that there's anything beyond that, that the public would need to be concerned with," he said.
Marco Island resident Dave Glancy is disappointed by the complaint against Niblock.
"It's very frustrating, especially since he's been on the job for a matter of just a few months," Glancy said.
Grifoni said the public should know more after Tuesday evening's city council meeting, in which the complaint against Niblock will be a topic of discussion.
"I expect him to be at the meeting tomorrow, and I expect that he will be here at his office tomorrow," Grifoni said.
A spokeswoman with the Collier County Sheriff's Office said that they are in the very beginning of their investigation into the complaint, and had no immediate information to release.
