Man charged with second degree murder in connection to toddler's death

Canfield was originally arrested on Capital Sexual Battery charges

UPDATE (5/18)-- The Lee County Sheriffs Office announced in a press conference that Nicholas Stephen Canfield has been charged with Second Degree Murder for the death of the two year old in addition to his charges of Capital Sexual Battery.

Sheriff Carmine says there are three children in the home and charges are pending for one other child.

This is a continuing and active investigation.


UPDATE (3 pm) : The two-year old child who was found unresponsive on April 29th has passed away.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Office of the State Attorney say they are continuing to work together on this case.

The Lee County Sheriffs Office announced arrested and charged a North Fort Myers man with Capital Sexual Battery.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about an unresponsive two year old.

When deputies arrived, Nicholas Canfield, 25, was performing life-saving measures on the child.

First responders transported the child to the hospital.

It was determined that the child suffered recent sexual abuse as well as fresh bruises, swelling, and other forms of physical trauma.

The child is in critical condition with a poor prognosis.

Nicholas Stephen Canfield was arrested.
