CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The city of Cape Coral is trying to beef up security in the area, and the city council is asking for more taxpayer money to help keep criminals off the streets.

The city wants to put 8 license plate readers on Southeast 47th Terrace, where they completed the Cape Streetscape project.

These cameras would help Cape Coral Police find stolen cars, people on the wanted list, and help solve Amber Alerts.

The cameras would scan license plates of passing cars and compare the plates to different databases. If, for example, someone reported a car as stolen, it would send an alert to police.

The city said the license plate readers would only take pictures of plates, not of drivers.

The police department said they will not save the images.

The city said it would cost about $101,000 to put the cameras in. City council plans to vote on it in their regular meeting at 4:30 Monday afternoon.
