CAPE CORAL, Fla — Drive sober or get pulled over, that's a message the Cape Coral Police Department wants drivers to be aware of this holiday season.

The department says it will be patrolling for drunk driving from now until January 1.

Back in December of 2019, Cape Coral Police said 210 people were killed nationwide as a result of drunk driving. This year alone, seven out of 19, or 37% of fatal crashes were the result of drunk driving.

In addition to monitoring drunk driving, the Cape Coral Police Department is also calling on drivers to be aware of their surroundings. If you see a drunk driver on the road, call police right away at 239-574-3223, or call 911.

The Cape Coral Police Department said you can help keep everyone on the road safe by doing the following:

  • Even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving drunk—or worse, the risk of having a crash.
  • If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins.
  • If you have been drinking, do not drive. Call a taxi, Uber, phone a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
