CAPE CORAL, Fla-- The Cape Coral Police Department's volunteer unit provides more than $1 million a year in kind services, an equivalent to almost 3% of its annual budget. However, Cape PD said  its volunteer numbers are down and it's currently looking for volunteers.

Volunteers are responsible for a range of duties including traffic control, parking and administrative paperwork.

"It's cheaper than a divorce. I mean it's simple because you are going to be hanging around with a wife or whatever. You get out of the house, you have a sense of duty to the city, you return things to the city, it's like contributing back," said volunteer coordinator Jerry Monroe.

Monroe has been a volunteer with Cape PD since retiring in New Jersey and moving to SWFL in 2009. He said it's a rewarding experience and keeps him busy.

The average age of a volunteer is in their mid-60's, but you only need to be 18 to sign up. You're expected to donate 16 hours a month, but some volunteers work up to 150 hours.

The next volunteer academy starts September 11th. Application are due July 21st.

You can contact the Police Volunteer Unit at (239) 242-3346.
