CAPE CORAL, Fla. --- Cape Coral City Council members unanimously approved a skimmer ordinance at Monday nights meeting.

According to Cape Coral Police 16 skimmers have been found on pumps in Cape Coral over the last year, making this the fastest growing type of crime in the area.

"The fact of the matter is the skimmers are so good now, there's no visual difference between a compromised pump and an uncompromised pump," said LT. Dana Coston with Cape Coral Police.

Local police officers voicing their concerns to lawmakers and the new skimmer ordinance would require gas station to install locks designed for specifically to each station.

"Having a physical lock really limits and inhabits the ability for these skimmers to place these skimmers and get your credit card number," said LT Coston.

Gas station owners would also be required to install a system which would make the pump stop working if it has been tampered with.
