FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla -- A proposed bill would keep you from wearing certain shoes while driving motorzied vehicles like a motorcycle or moped, depending on your age.

If you're 18 and under and the bill gets passed, you’d be required to wear closed-toe shoes while driving things like a motorcycle, moped, motorized bicycle, scooter, or low-speed vehicle, such as a golf cart. The same would go for minors riding on any of these.

Fox 4 spoke with the state senator who filed this. State Senator Tina Polsky, District 29, explained that the idea behind the bill actually came about through a contest for high school students.

She said a student from Wellington High School came up with the idea, because he noticed minors driving in flip-flops or sandals was a potentially dangerous problem.

Senator Polsky said it would be difficult to include people over the age of 18 in a bill like this because Florida is quite libertarian. She there’s a stronger chance of it passing by focusing on minors because we have duties as adults and parents to protect their safety.

If passed, this would go into effect in July.
