CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A clinical supervisor in behavioral health explains the abuse of romantic relationships between adults and minors.
The discussion comes after Fox 4 learned a Cape Coral high school teacher was accused of having a romantic relationship with a student.
Reid Kirchhoff with David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health says there isn’t a textbook standard for understanding these cases of abuse.
“There’s clearly things going on that need to be addressed and identified,” said Kirchhoff, a DLC Clinical Supervisor.
When it comes to any relationship of an adult and minor, he says the power and ability to reason are not equal.
Kirchhoff says adults have the authority to behave and act appropriately. However, due to past experiences or abuse, they can choose not to.
“It’s not the same level of understanding. It’s not the same level of processing for what’s going on and what the potential fall out could be,” said Kirchhoff. “The victim in this relationship then struggles to have healthy relationships moving forward and to understand their own worth.”
