ATV driver rescued from Cape Coral canal

UPDATE: The Cape Coral Police Department responded to the an ATV crash at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

The driver of the ATV, 20-year-old De'onte Mitchell failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of N.E. 21st Avenue before hitting a piece of berm.

Mitchell was ejected off of the ATV and landed in the canal.

A family member was reportedly with Mitchell and found him in the canal floating and unconscious. 

Mitchell's family member yelled for help causing a nearby neighbor to come to assist. 

The neighbor went into the water and pulled Mitchell to safety.

According to Cape Coral Police alcohol is not a factor in the accident. 

Mitchell was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. --- An ATV driver was rescued from a canal on Wednesday night. 

The accident happened on Northeast 20th Avenue at 12th Lane in Cape Coral. 

Cape Coral Police Department confirm that the driver of the ATV went into the canal and was pulled to rescue. 

The victim was taking to the hospital and is being treated. There is no word on the extent to the drivers injuries. 

Cape Coral Police are still investigating how the driver ended up in the canal.
