An armed robbery was reported over the Labor Day weekend on Fort Myers Beach. An 18-year-old Cape Coral man told Lee County deputies that he and a friend were on the beach near the Lani Kai Resort around 3 a.m. Saturday, when a homeless man asked them for money. They offered him five dollars and a cigarette, but said that the man pulled out a gun and demanded the rest of their cash.

According to the sheriff's report, the Cape Coral man said the robber ran off, but that a friend ran after him and somehow managed to get the handgun, which they said they threw into the bushes near the Diamond Head Resort.

The victims told the deputies that they reported the incident to prevent a child from getting hold of the gun, but deputies searched and could find no trace of it.

A spokeswoman for Lani Kai said she was unaware of the reported robbery, but when asked about increasing security, said that their security staff already patrols both the beach and resort on a regular basis.

Despite reporting the crime to deputies, the victim said he did not wish to prosecute.
