LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A man who was walking to his car in a Gateway parking lot says a teenager ran up to him, pointed a gun and stole his car.

"I thought it was safe here," said Kathy Schwab, who lives right around the corner from Towne Lake Drive.

The young man ran and pointed his weapon at the man's stomach saying, "give me your car keys, give me your car keys."

The victim surrendered his keys to the car robber. Schwab can relate she's experienced something similar.

"I was held at gunpoint by my ex-husband, so it brings back memories," she said.

After the crook got his hands on the keys he bolted to a 2013 black Hyundai Sonata. Then found out the keys the man gave him didn't work. He then used the key fob to locate the car that actually matched the car

"He's pretty stupid, something like that is almost comical" said Josephine Smiarowski, after she learned about the thief's mishap.

The thief jumped in the 2006 purple Chevrolet Cobalt and raced towards Gateway Boulevard.

Schwab says she'll be more aware of her surroundings after she heard about the car jacking.

"I am really going to be cautious about my whereabouts, really look around," she said.
