Deputy airlifted after being run over during traffic stop

UPDATE 5:05 P.M.:

Glen Alonzo Steele was released from the hospital with minor injuries. He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail and will remain there until he is transported to Charlotte County Jail.

Steele is facing the following charges:

  • Possession of Methamphetamine, Cocaine, and Clonazepam
  • Possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia
  • Battery on law enforcement officer x2
  • Fleeing to elude law enforcement officer with wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property
  • Driving while license suspended, revoked, canceled, or disqualified.
  • False ID given to LEO
  • Leaving the scene of a crash

UPDATE 11:37 A.M.:

During the early morning hours of February 25th, a traffic stop was conducted on a white Infiniti for a faulty tail light in the area of Tamiami Trail and Adalia Terrace.

Law enforcement made contact with the driver who originally provided deputies with a false name.

Throughout their investigation, deputies were able to correctly identify the driver as Glen Alonzo Steele. Communications alerted deputies of an active Charlotte County warrant for Steele for failure to appear on a 2020 traffic charge.

The deputy involved has been released from the hospital sustaining only minor injuries.

This is an extremely active case with multiple charges pending for Glen Alonzo Steele.


The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is currently working a scene in the area of Adalia Ter to Cranberry Boulevard.

The area is closed.

CCSO says there is no danger to the public.

They are asking you to avoid the area if possible.

CCSO says at approximately 1:28 am deputies conducted a traffic stop on a white Infinity with a taillight out.

The driver provided false information to deputies. However, an investigation revealed his name was Glen Alonzo Steele.

Steele had a warrant for a suspended license.

Deputies searched his vehicle and found Cocaine, Meth, and pills.

The suspect fled on foot jumped into the passenger side of the vehicle.

Deputy Combs pursued him, a struggle ensued in the car, a taser was deployed.

Steel was able to put the vehicle into gear, then dragging Corporal Brad Combs alongside the vehicle.

The struggle continued and at some point, Combs was thrown from the vehicle and it is believed he was run over.

He sustained compound fractures he was airlifted to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

The deputies continued to pursue the suspect into North Port where he then rolled his vehicle several times before landing in a canal near Bessermer Avenue and Florala Street.

The suspect was flown to Sarasota Memorial where he is undergoing treatment for a significant head injury.
