NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Residents in North Fort Myers say algae is persisting, Thursday despite some cleanup efforts.
The thick blue-green algae was spotted in the Waterway Estates neighborhood, where crews tested cleanup methods Friday. "It's back, it's the same crap, it's back the same way," said resident Al Dworkin.
Commission Board Chairman Cecil Pendergrass said the county can't guarantee all algae will be removed during the cleanup process, or that it won't come back, especially with tides shifting. The cleanup taking place is a pilot project, and they are still evaluating results. "They're getting the large quantities, the thicker masses off the water. It's not going to get all of it out, that's why it's called a pilot program, but we have to do something," said Pendergrass.
Cleanup efforts will continue in Cape Coral, Thursday. The county has a $700,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental protection to assist. "We're going to do anything we can to relieve this to help the residents," Pendergrass said.
