Lightning is the likely cause of a fire that spanned 100 acres at a compost farm Wednesday.

The fire started Tuesday at 1600 Immokalee Road, on land owned by Jones Mine.  Mulch, palm fronds and tree limbs were among some of the agricultural debris burning there.

The fire sent smoke billowing thousands of feet into the sky.

"I would encourage you if you are in the area where that smoke is laying down as a result of the weather we are experiencing, it's probably best to stay indoors keep your windows and air conditioner on," said North Collier Fire Assistant Chief Eric Watson.

Watson said there are no homes in the vicinity of the fire, no one has been hurt.

Crews are monitoring the fire, but the owner of the land is using backhoes to help smother it.
