Clam Bay is a haven for manatees, and with an increase in personal watercraft, residents want a speed zone.

The area has been without one since 2009.  Dozens of residents, most from Pelican Bay, told FWC officials at a meeting Tuesday, they want the speed zones back.

"What its become is a drag strip for ski boats a figure 8 for inner tubes," said Steve Gregorson.

Residents say watercraft not only pose a danger to these creatures, it also wrecks their food supply.

"The sea grass are damaged by the turbidity that's stirred up so it becomes less attractive and conducive," said Mary Johnson.

But one speaker said Manatees are threatened more by water quality and sediment that's built up in the bay.

FWC will likely decide this spring whether Clam Bay will get a manatee speed zone, and how slow boats will have to go in that zone.
