NAPLES, Fla. — The Special Olympics torch made its way through Naples today, carried by three different Collier County law enforcement agencies.
It’s called the Flame of Hope, because that’s exactly what local law enforcement officers are giving these Special Olympics athletes.
The flame passed through Naples on Friday for the 39th annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. Officers and deputies from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Naples Police and Marco Island Police participated.
The 4.8-mile jog started at the Sheriff’s Office, went to Naples Police headquarters, then finished at Publix, which is a sponsor of the Torch Run.
“We have a great time along with the athletes,” Collier County sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “This is a great fundraiser and awareness event for Special Olympics.”
And the athletes loved the support. Joshua Buchanan, who does horseback riding with the Special Olympics, got to ride in a convertible with the runners.
“I think it’s great,” Joshua said. “Lots of fun, a great day.”
Kevin Kennedy, who plays bocce ball in the Special Olympics, got to sit next to his friend Joshua.
“I love the car, and I love the Special Olympics,” Kevin said.
Law enforcement officers throughout the state raise close to a million dollars a year for athletes like Joshua and his friend Kevin, according to the Special Olympics.
Collier County law enforcement has participated in the Torch Run for more than 30 years.
The Flame of Hope will go through all of Florida’s 67 counties until it ends up at the Special Olympic Games in Orlando beginning May 20.
