Before Hurricane Irma arrived in Southwest Florida emergency officials urgently tried to prepare for the absolute worst. Charlotte County residents relieved after seeing the minimal damage left behind by Hurricane Irma. Downtown Punta Gorda was inside the mandatory evacuation and was expected to get lots of damage but that was not the case.

Storm surge levels were expected to be taller than some homes but there were only some flooded streets, uprooted trees, submerged street signs that had fallen over, a few peeled off roofs and some parking lots littered in palm fronds.
