Two tornadoes touch down in Charlotte County

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (UPDATE 8am Thursday) -- Thursday, Charlotte County Emergency Management will be surveying damage from Wednesday's tornadoes.

Gov. Rick Scott will tour the Deep Creek area at 5:30pm Thursday to assess the damage.

The Charlotte County Chapter of the American Red Cross is staging at Charlotte Fire/EMS Station 12 at 2001 Luther Road in Deep Creek. For residents whose vehicles were damaged, Charlotte County Transit offers door-to-door transportation. To reserve a ride, call 941.575.4000.

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (UPDATE 11pm)- All power has been restored to the Deep Creek area, some areas may be spotty, but all power should be up and running. 

The Charlotte County Building Official has now deemed 11 homes uninhabitable in the Deep Creek area.

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado with 97 mph winds hit the Deep Creek area of Charlotte County and an EF-0 tornado hit the Murdock area of Charlotte County.

No injuries have been reported, but the storms caused widespread structural damage to homes in the Deep Creek community. A total of 34 homes were damaged in Deep Creek, six of which have been deemed uninhabitable by the Charlotte County Building Official.

Power lines are down. Road blockages caused by downed tree limbs are being cleared. Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputies are blocking access to certain neighborhoods while Florida Power & Light and Charlotte County personnel continue to assess storm damage and restore power. FPL estimates power will be completely restored within six hours. CCSO deputies will continue to patrol affected areas overnight.

Tree and limb damage has been reported in Murdock, including at the county’s Murdock administration center and nearby businesses in the Murdock Circle area.
