A flood-prone street in Collier County is under water again, thanks to recent heavy rains. But relief may soon be on the way for the beleaguered residents of Karen Drive, just off of Bayshore Drive in East Naples.

"We call it Lake Karen," said Holly Mootispaw, who said she's getting used to driving through standing water on Karen Drive. The street's drainage system can't handle heavy rain.

"Like the last couple of days," Mootispaw said. "Raining all day - it can't go anywhere."

Her neighbor Nicholas Gregory told Fox 4 that Collier County needs to do something about Lake Karen.

"In my opinion, the road needs to be raised up," Gregory said. "They need to bring in some more landfill, and raise the road up about a foot."

Jean Jourdan of the Bayshore Community Redevelopment Agency said that while improvements to Karen Drive's drainage system are a long time in coming, county commissioners are expected to approve a $350,000 project to construct new culverts and stormwater drainage.

That project is expected to begin within a few months, and should be completed before the start of the next rainy season.
