'Lincoln' leads Oscars with 12 nominations
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - The Civil War saga "Lincoln" leads the Academy Awards with 12 nominations, including best picture, director for Steven Spielberg and acting honors for Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.
Also among the 9 nominees for best picture Thursday: the old-age love story "Amour"; the Iran hostage thriller "Argo"; the independent hit "Beasts of the Southern Wild"; the slave-revenge narrative "Django Unchained"; the musical "Les Miserables"; the shipwreck story "Life of Pi"; the lost-souls romance "Silver Linings Playbook"; and the Osama bin Laden manhunt chronicle "Zero Dark Thirty."
The Oscars feature a best-picture field that ranges from five to 10 films depending on a complex formula of ballots from the 5,856 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Best Director nominees this year include Steven Spielberg and David O. Russell.
Spielberg received his seventh Best Director nomination for "Lincoln," his drama about the 16th president. Spielberg has won the award twice before, for "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan."
Spielberg is joined in the category by Ang Lee ("Life of Pi"), David O. Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook") and two major surprises: Michael Haneke ("Amour") and Behn Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild"). Presumed favorites Ben Affleck ("Argo"), Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty") and Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables") were left off the list.
Best Actor nominees at the 85th annual Academy Awards include Daniel Day-Lewis and Hugh Jackman.
The "Lincoln" star was expected to earn a nomination for playing Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's film. He's favored to win what would be his third Best Actor trophy at the Oscars on Feb. 24.
Hugh Jackman was nominated for playing Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables." It's Jackman's first Academy Award nomination.
Day-Lewis and Jackman were joined in the category by Denzel Washington ("Flight"), Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings Playbook") and Joaquin Phoenix ("The Master"). Most had expected John Hawkes ("The Sessions") to be nominated in this category, but he missed the cut.
The nominees for best actress include Jessica Chastain for ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Naomi Watts ("The Impossible"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Emmanuelle River ("Amour") and Quvenzhane Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild").
