FORT MYERS, Fla. - A Lee County School safety expert is concerned Florida lawmakers are doing the wrong thing to make schools safe.
Currently a first reading in the Florida House of Representatives would require a renovation of all schools in Florida to have bulletproof windows and door locks.
Patrick Hayhurst Director of School Security for the Lee County School district isn't on board with this idea.
Hayhurst says the renovations in House bill 201 would be costly into the millions of dollars.
The bill had its first reading a few weeks ago.
The proposed changes would be required by the middle of 2015 and Hayhurst says the idea of making schools safe is a good thing but we don't want to make schools prisons.
Hayhurst says you can't cure a symptom rather go after the whole disease.
He believes the answer lies within SRO Officers saying they can do much more than just sit there like a window.
