Grandson pleads guilty to killing Cape Coral man

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Garrett Kern received a lengthy prison sentence as part of a plea deal in the 2nd degree murder of his grandfather, James Arthur of Cape Coral.
Kern killed the 80-year-old Arthur in October 2011 and then went on the run to Chicago where law enforcement caught up to him the following month.
The 23-year-old Kern received a 38 year prison sentence today for the murder.
The family wanted to avoid a trial and agreed to the plea deal if Kern delivered on a promise to go into detail about why and how he killed his grandfather.
