WFTX -    This will be the third year for the Scope for Hope 5k run/walk to raise money for prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

Funds are raised for 21st Century C.A.R.E. Foundation, whose mission is to provide financial assistance to cancer patients and also to educate the public, and to prevent cancer.

The run/walk was previously named Get Your Rear In Gear 5K but 25% went to that organization. With the overwhelming request to keep all monies local, they have branched off from GYRIG.

This all started when Vera Owens, a cancer survivor, wanted to raise money for colon cancer patients.

It was her hope that people will have the same access to colonoscopies which detected her cancer early. It is her biggest hope that colonoscopies will prevent colon cancer all together.

She is now 70 years old and still running. In fact, 6 months after her surgery, she ran a half marathon and placed in her age group!

The race started with about 300 participants in 2011.  Last year, over 500 participants came and about $30,000 was raised.

With this money, C.A.R.E was able to provide colonoscopies for over 50 people and have been able to provide financial assistance to over 40 colon cancer patients.

This year's event will be held on March 23, 2013 at Hammond Stadium.
