Nervous Nellie's celebrates St. Patrock's Day
FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - St. Patrock's Day was the holiday at Nervous Nellie's on Fort Myers Beach.
"You're going to see a lot of people having a lot of fun," observed the owner, Rob Degennaro.
Throughout the day thousands were taking it all in at the waterfront restaurant. Degennaro coined it the biggest St. Patrick's Day party in Lee County.
Connie Coffey knows. She was dressed to the nine's in green.
"I like the idea of being able to dress up and if i was drinking a vodka tonic, id have a green one," said Coffey, of Fort Myers.
No green drinks but the owners started baking very early.
"The neat thing about it is, we actually started one o'clock in the morning," said Degennaro. "Baking home baked breads, Irish soda bread, foccaccias, the corned beef's been simmering all night."
Melissa Berger said the corned beef and cabbage she ordered was the best she's had.
"It's just really flavorful and juicy and tender and taste's great," said Berger, of Fort Myers.
Last year, the joint sold more than 2,000 pounds of corned beef at their party. This year, they're hoping to set a record.
"We've documented it from the time the corned beef arrived on our location and going out on through as we're selling it," said Degennaro.
Cabbage bowling was drawing crowds too, and four bands played throughout the day.
"It means a fun time where everybody seems to be friendlier than normal and just enjoy each other's company," observed Jim Thompson, of Fort Myers, while dining with his friends.
A portion of the proceeds go to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
