Concerns about break-ins in the Cape

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Are there more break-ins happening in the Cape? Or are sales people trying to scare residents?
That's the question Four In Your Corner's Colleen Hogan is taking to police, after a door-to-door salesman tried to scared residents.

Fox 4 employee David Hicks had a weird experience with a guy at his house. He says the man said he was from a security company, but wouldn't give his name or tell what the company was.
He tried to get personal information from Hicks, like who lived in the house and if there was a security system. He also told Hicks there had been a rash of break-ins in his neighborhood, just off County Club.
Hicks said the whole encounter felt strange, so he called the Cape Coral Police Department to report it.
We asked Sgt. Dana Coston about the encounter. He said it was likely a legitimate sales-call, but whoever it was used questionable tactics to scare people into buying their product. However, Coston also says that thieves do pretend to be people they're not in order to get a glimpse into your home.
The department offers an interactive crime map on their website www.capecops.com that lets you plug in your info and see what's happened in your neighborhood with a 12-hour delay. There is also a Crime Reports app for iphone and Android phones you can download for free to do the same thing.
Coston says if a resident has a concern about someone who came to their door, you can always call and have an officer come out and investigate. You can also request more neighborhood patrols on their website, www.capecops.com
