Goodwill Store in Port Charlotte evacuated due to propane leak
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - An abandoned propane tank is causing some headaches today in Port Charlotte forcing the evacuation of a Goodwill Store at 2325 Tamiami Trail.
The problems started around 11 a.m. when construction crews were doing paving work in an adjoining parking lot. A Bobcat operator scraping the pavement hit a value to the propane tank causing a leak.
The leaking gas was quickly shut off but it did force Charlotte County firefighters to evacuate the store and some nearby apartments.
After consulting with Amerigas it was decided that the best plan is to burn off the remaining propane. The store remains evacuated but apartment residents have been allowed to go back to their homes.
The flame from the burn could reach 15 feet in height.
We'll have more tonight on FOX 4 News at 6.
