Bike trails may one day link Miami with Naples
MIAMI (AP) - Biking and walking trails may one day link the national parks, nature preserves and camp grounds that stretch from Miami to Everglades City and Naples.
The National Park Service has selected Miami-Dade County parks officials to develop a master plan for the proposed Everglades greenway. The longest portion of the trails would run alongside the Tamiami Trail for 75 miles.
County planners are hosting public workshops this week to outline their ideas and hear public comment on the proposed River of Grass Greenway.
Officials say they want to open up a huge swath of the Everglades to people without cars. They tell The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/10CE3Ge ) that they hope to have a master plan completed by the end of 2014.
Federal grants cover the $1.5 million planning costs.
