Manatee deaths from red tide set a record

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The red tide woes in Southwest Florida is taking its toll on the manatee population.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reports that red tide has claimed 174 manatees so far this year, a record in a single calendar year. 

The majority of the red tide, manatee related deaths, have been in the Lee County area. 

So far, thanks to the public, 12 manatees suffering from red tide related illnesses, have been rescued

The FWC is asking the public to be on the lookout for manatees affected by red tide.  They can call the FWC's Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
