NEW DELHI, INDIA - A man on trial for the gang rape and fatal beating of a woman aboard a bus in India is found dead in jail.
Police say he killed himself.
Ram Singh was accused of driving the bus on which the 23-year-old student was raped by a group of six men in December.
He was under a suicide watch at a jail in New Delhi.
Authorities say he hanged himself with his own clothes.
Singh and four other defendants were facing the death penalty if convicted.
The crime horrified people in India and set off protests nationwide.
A sixth suspect is being tried and jailed separately because he is a juvenile.
The woman and a male friend were attacked after boarding the bus last December, as they headed home after a movie.
Police say the six men beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to give her massive internal injuries.
The victims were dumped naked on the roadside.
The woman died two weeks later.
