Double fatality in East Fort Myers involving Lee County deputy
EAST FORT MYERS, Fla. - An elderly couple from Ohio were killed Sunday morning in a crash involving a Lee County deputy on Palm Beach Boulevard at Mississippi Street in East Fort Myers.
The Florida Highway Patrol identified the couple killed in the crash as 84-year-old John Steffen and his 77-year-old wife Marilyn Steffen, seasonal residents from Pandora, Ohio.
According to the FHP Steffen was attempting to make a left turn from Mississippi Street onto Palm Beach Boulevard when he failed to notice Deputy Robert Torres responding with his emergency lights on responding to a 911 call.
Steffen pulled in front of Torres squad car. The crash left Torres wtih minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
