SANFORD, FL - Tuesday marks one year since Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman - George Zimmerman.

At the center of the incident that took the teen's life is race relations. In Sanford, where the shooting happened, residents say race relations has improved. But some worry what would happen if Zimmerman were to be acquitted.

The 29-year-old wasn't originally charged with murder, which sparked outrage from many, including civil rights leaders.

After an investigation by special prosecutor - Angela Corey - he was charged with second-degree murder in April of last year.

Zimmerman maintains he shot the teen in self defense, in accordance with the sunshine state's stand your ground law.

He's expected to stand trial in June.
