CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Ever think of adopting a retired professional athlete?

The volunteers and founders of Joey's Greyhound Friends in Cape Coral want you to consider that question.

The group brought four of their adoptable greyhounds to Su Casa boutique on Cape Coral Parkway Saturday from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Su Casa on Cape Coral Parkway normally has things for your home, but that's not all they had in the store today.  Dogs Seltzer, E-Z, Shadow and Jewel were hanging out in and out of the store, meeting people and hoping to find their forever homes.

The group's founder says it's so important to give the retired racing dogs a shot at a new life during events around town.

"It's our lifeline," Brigitte Cooper, founder of Joey's Greyhound Friends said. "We call it meet and greet. People come and meet the greyhounds and fall in love with their gentle nature and their wonderful demeanor. If we wouldn't have people like here at Su Casa to let us come and show our greyhounds, we wouldn't be able to show them to the public."

If you think the dogs need a big yard and tons of physical activity, you might be surprised to learn that most of the former athletes just want to snuggle up and be lazy.

"They have energy for two-minutes," Cooper said. "They're short-distance sprinters, so they go up to high speeds very quickly but then their energy is spent. They're couch potatoes, most of the time, they just want to lay around on a soft bed or the furniture. And that's all they want. They want to be with you."
