DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -  At least 28 people were hurt after a fiery crash at the Daytona Speedway in Florida Saturday.

It happened during the last lap of a Nationwide Series race.

Debris, including an engine, flew all over the track, with some reaching the second level of the stands -- about 20 feet up.

NASCAR's president said the protective fence did its job by preventing more serious injuries or even deaths.

Some of the injured were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center.

All of the injured are spectators who were in the stands when debris from the cars went flying through the air.

After the crash, several people were seen lying on the ground and emergency officials carried others off on stretchers.

Several of the drivers involved were also checked out at the track and released.

The crash happened at the end when the cars were jostling for a position to finish and got tangled up.

It happened on the same track where the Daytona 500 will be held Sunday.
