Group wants city leaders to pass resolution defending 2nd Amendment rights
MARCO ISLAND, Fla.- A string of mass shootings nationwide is leading to heated debates over gun restrictions, but now one Collier County group wants local government to take a stand.
Keith Flaugh and nearly 50 other activists in Lee and Collier Counties are working to preserve a person's 2nd Amendment rights.
'The rights of the people to keep and bear arms should not be infringed period. It's that simple," said Flaugh.
After mass shootings like the Sandy Hook tragedy, states like New York have signed new gun control legislation like baning Internet sales of assault weapons. The move makes New York's gun laws the strictest in the country.
"I wouldn't want to live in New York, but strongly agree with the rights of New York to pass its own laws."
There has also been talk on the federal level to tighten gun regulations and Keith says the federal government is overstepping its boundaries. He is starting at the grassroots level by drafting this resolution and introducing it to Marco Island City Council. It will also go to County Commissioners in Collier at the next meeting.
"It is patterned after a successful case in North Carolina, Beaufort County, all 5 commissioners submitted this to their governor ."
The resolution if approved, would be a statement from local elected leaders saying they will not support the federal government's attacks on the 2nd Amendment. A message they want Governor Rick Scott to agree with too.
"We want them to send this resolution to the governor and to the legislature to get the governor to pass a law."
Fox 4 reached out to both city and county leaders and did not hear back. The Governor's Office did respond to Fox 4 and told us his office is looking into these resolutions.
Gun rights supporters will hold a Town Hall meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Marco Presbyterian Church, 875 W. Elkcam Circle.
