One man in custody, another flees after violent early morning restaurant robbery
Sheriff Mike Scott 'optimistic' that arrest will lead to others
LEE COUNTY - The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating an armed robbery at a Wendy's restaurant at Palm Beach Blvd and Buckingham Road in the Ft. Myers Shores neighborhood.
It happened just before 2:00 a.m. Thursday.
Deputies arrived on scene within minutes of the 911 call for an armed robbery in progress.
Sheriff Mike Scott, who came to the scene to brief reporters on the crime, says shots were exchanged between the suspects and law enforcement. Scott wouldn't comment on who shot first, but he did say there was one 'very, very minor' injury. He says he is thankful his deputy is okay.
"Shots were fired," Scott said. "We're not gonna discuss who shot who, who was hit, if anybody was hit."
One person was taken into custody, the other guy fled on foot.
Scott says they're aggressively looking for the man who fled, who he describes as a Hispanic man. A helicopter was dispatched to search for the suspect, but no one has been caught yet.
This robbery took place right across the road from another violent robbery two days ago at the Dunkin Donuts. A similar robbery happened Friday night at the Dominoes Pizza up the road. Deputies say a Hispanic man held up the store, getting into a fight with a worker, who had to be taken to the hospital.
"We believe there are similarities," Scott said. "We're looking at that very, very closely."
