St. Matthew's House chef competition
Some diners in Naples getting a very special feast...fit for the Food Network! It's all part of a competition between some of the area's top caterers. As Fox 4's Karl Fortier shows us, the diners are not necessarily who you might think.
Every day, Eric Delano and his staff have a big task in front of them: prepare lunch and dinner fo up to 150 people, using...
"Whatever shows upon the truck today," says Delano. "Whatever our community has donated to us is what our chefs have to work with."
So he had an idea: what if he could get some of the best chefs in the area to try his job for a day? And maybe even make it a little competitive?
"We're trying to bring awareness to the community about St. Matthew's House, what our residents are going through, and what they have to deal with on a day-to-day basis," says Delano.
Today's challenger: Lisa Resch and her crew from the Carolina Catering Company.
"I'm surprised at how challenging it is," says Resch. "I thought 5 hours would be a large amount of time, but we'll be right up to the minute. It's pretty challenging to not know what you'll be cooking with, and not know the space that you're working in."
The first item on the agenda? They had to figure out a menu.
"We're going to do some stuffed mushrooms to pass, we're doing some salmon cakes," Resch says. "Our main course is chicken and biscuits, we have a steak salad, we have a sausage pasta. So that's all feel-good, home-made food."
But the food isn't the only thing to consider!
Resch: "You can have the best food in the world, but if the service isn't great, you don't have great china, great flatware...it's the whole experience, and I think that's important tonight, especially for the residents."
And as for the competition? Lisa doesn't seem to be too concerned about that.
"I'd love to win," says Resch. "That would be the icing on the cake. But I hope the residents are like, 'Wow. That was really nice.' If they're happy, then that would be the best thing."
