Gas prices rise
If you meant to fill up your gas tank on Thursday but put it off until Friday, you might have noticed prices are a little higher than you expected. That's because gasoline made the biggest one-day price jump in almost two years.
Drivers in Southwest Florida, just about everywhere else, are no strangers to hikes in gas prices. Marie Sampson is from upstate New York, and says that compared to where she's from, this is cheap.
"We just came from New York," says Sampson. "It went up about 14 cents in the last week."
It was high enough in her home state to make her barely notice the recent price jump.
"It was four dollars a few months ago," she says. "So this is a treat for us."
According to Triple A, current gas prices in Southwest Florida average $3.55 for a gallon of unleaded. That's up ten cents from last week, and almost twenty cents from last month. But compared to last year, gas prices are down.
But even though prices may be lower here than in upstate New York, Sampson says she doesn't plan on spending much time on the road here in Florida.
"It's pretty much local, because we have everything we need here in Naples."
And while some of us may prefer bikes or other means of transportation to get us around town, gas is still a better bargain here than in some other parts of the country.
"I'm just happy to be here," says Sampson. "We can get just about anything we want here, and still feel like we're saving compared to New York."
