Collier Co. looks to extend Whippoorwill Lane in North Naples
NAPLES, Fla.- An informative meeting about the extension of Whippoorwill Lane in Naples is scheduled for Monday night, Jan. 28, from 5pm to 6pm at Naples Church of Christ, 12760 Livingston Road.
Ed Barr moved into Marbella Lakes about 3 years when the gated community first opened.
"It's great, it's a great community here, family oriented community, friendly people," said Barr.
The area right outside his neighborhood is filled with trees and sidewalks for bikers and joggers. Ed is now hearing about the possibility of road construction which will impact residents in his community and also people living off of Whippoorwill Lane.
"My initial reaction is I'm not too happy about that. It will increase traffic probably," said Barr.
Here is what the county wants to do: It wants to extend Whippoorwill Lane. Currently, it's a dead end road that runs north to south off of Pine Ridge Road between Livingston Road and I-75. In the proposed plan, Whippoorwill Lane would be extended to Marbella Lakes Drive. The county says this would give nearby homeowners better access to their communities.
Les Appel is a part-time resident and has several concerns about the project.
'There's a nice walking path here and we get to use it as well as Whippoorwill and that's going to be disturbed. I just don't see the purpose and it's expensive. Where are they getting the money for these ridiculous projects?" said Appel.
A county spokeswoman says its a county project estimated to cost $1.2 million dollars paid for by gas taxes. The county says the extended road would be better for emergency vehicles and help with traffic flow.
Some neighbors think the project might be positive since the extension of the road might make the area less secluded and therefore safer.
Construction could start in summer and would last 10 months. The county is expected to start bids in February.
