Port Charlotte father arrested for shooting death of son, age 3
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell announced the arrest this afternoon of the father of a 3-year-old boy who shot himself in the head with an unsecured handgun last November.
24-year-old Christopher C. Davis of Port Charlotte is charged with culpable negligence, a felony.
Sheriff Prummell said, “Citizens do have the Constitutional right to own firearms, but, if they are going to own a firearm, they must take responsibility for its security.”
The incident happened shortly after 3 a.m. on November 18 when a medical call him related to a three-year-old boy who was not breathing and reportedly had blood on him.
Deputies arrived to find the child’s mother, Lisset Elias, 22, was carrying the child wrapped in a blanket; she standing in the driveway. The boy, Christopher Eli Davis, was not breathing and had no pulse. He died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Evidence showed the injuries were consistent with the victim shooting himself. The semi-automatic weapon used, which caused the death of the child, belonged to his father Christopher Davis who thought he had secured the weapon in a case, out of reach of the child.
Investigators determined Davis left or stored a loaded firearm within the reach or easy access of a minor child which resulted in his death.
Davis had been released on his own recognizance.
