Fort Myers office manager arrested for embezzlement
FORT MYERS, Fla. - A trusted employee for a major Fort Myers area car dealership is facing a charge of first degree grand theft for embezzling more than $250,000.
24-year-old Ashley Coffey was arrested Saturday at her mother's home in Tice. Coffey worked as the office manager for Sonic Automotive which owns the local Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz and Honda dealerships.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office Economic Crimes Unit, Coffey used her position over a period of almost four years to embezzle $256,482.
Investigators say Coffey would systematically look up old customer numbers in the computer and overwrite information. She would then generate bogus extended warranty cancellations and cut refund checks in her name. After that she would forge a second signature on the check and deposit them in her personal account.
