Fatality in 'Tour de Cape' bike race
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A fatality marred the popular Tour de Cape bicycle race Sunday morning in Cape Coral.
James Heneghan, 69, of Cape Coral died after suffering head injuries in a crash with another bike.
According to the police report Heneghan was traveling east in the 2800 block of Beach Parkway West following a bicycle ridden by John Pokorny, 66. Police say Heneghan's front tire clipped the rear of Pokorny's bike and he flew off his bike hitting his head on the ground.
Heneghan was airflighted to Lee Memorial Hospital where he died this afternoon.
Witnesses say Heneghan had removed his helmet a few minutes before the crash and didn't have it on at the time of the crash.
