CAPE CORAL - A Lee County high school student is in the hospital after being struck by a pickup truck on his way to class.

"We're saddened anytime one of the students or children gets hurt," said the district's security director Patrick Hayhurst.

The 16-year-old was crossing De Navarra Parkway, in front of Island Coast High School, on his way to class Friday morning when he was struck by the vehicle, according to the school district.

School officials tell Fox 4 they notified the teen's parents who rushed to the scene. The student was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in serious condition, according to the sheriff's office, which is investigating the accident.

"The district's very upset about it," said Hayhurst. "We're being supportive to the school if they need any assistance from us and if the family needs any assistance we're working through the principal of the high school."
