Lee School District evacuated after water main accident
FORT MYERS - The water is off at the Lee County School District after a nearby construction accident almost forced the school district to cancel its monthly board meeting.
"They hit a water main and then the power line broke," said Superintendent Dr. Joseph Burke. "It's just been one silly disaster after another."
Around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, after the briefing meeting and before the regular 6 p.m. board meeting, an announcement was made to evacuate the building because of a "propane leak." About 20 minutes later everyone was given the all clear to return to the building.
Crews working on a nearby construction project hit a water line, knocking out water to the building.
At 10:30 p.m. crews were still working on repairing the water main break that nearly cancelled the meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Joseph Burke said with big decisions on the table the accident was bad timing.
Despite the accident, the meeting was still able to start on time.
