Florida manatee deaths down in 2012
CAPE CORAL, Fla - Researchers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report the number of manatee deaths fell in 2012. The FWC recorded 392 manatee deaths, the fewest number in the last three years.
Researchers attribute the drop to milder winter temperatures led to fewer cold-related deaths. A quarter of the deaths in 2012 were attributed to human-related causes.
The FWC says 81 manatee deaths were watercraft related in 2012, slightly below the yearly average of the past five years.
