Suspect dead in deputy involved shooting
FORT MYERS, Fla - The Lee County Sheriff's Office identified the man shot and killed in a gun battle Friday morning in South Fort Myers.
21-year-old Joseph Blake Powell of Fort Myers was shot and killed near Alico Road and U.S. 41
A call came in to the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 1:55 a.m. Friday morning about a disturbance at Cadillac Jack's restaurant off of U.S. 41. One caller advised someone was armed with a gun, another indicated shots had been fired.
Deputies say there were 20 to 30 people involved in the altercation, which did involve weapons.
Witnesses gave deputies a description of a vehicle with the possible suspects. A vehicle stop was made just south of Alico Road along U.S. 41
The passenger in the vehicle bailed out of the car and ran away with deputies giving chase. The subject was armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire with deputies. He was fatally wounded. No deputies were injured in the encounter.
The driver of the car was detained and interviewed by detectives with the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit.
The investigation forced the closure of southbound U.S. 41 at Alico Road for more than eight hours.
