NAPLES, Fla.- Principals, parents and teachers in Southwest Florida are heartbroken to learn about this latest tragedy. A gunman in Connecticut kills at least 20 children at a elementary school.

Denny Denison has spent close to two decades in the schools system. He's the principal at St. Elizabeth Seton in Naples. He gives me reaction to the mass school shooting in Connecticut.

"It is scary to read about, to see it on TV and to see what is happening," said Principal Denny Denison.

Denny says his school takes many precautions and monitors who goes in and out. For example, the perimeter of the school is always locked. There are cameras around the school including ones in the classrooms.

"The cameras help insure safety if something were to happen we go back and look at it. It doesn't stop anything, but hopefully it's a great deterrent as well."

School students and teachers recently practiced their emergency drill after a nearby bank robbery about 2 weeks ago in Golden Gate.

"We went into what is called a soft lock down. We were only suppose to do that for 30 minutes, but we kept it all day meaning no one allowed to go outside the school without an adult."

Although this school is private, the principal tells me safety measures mimic public schools meaning they follow recommendations by the Collier County Sheriff's Office. Now a school with deep roots in faith, prays for the victims in Connecticut.

Bonita Springs Charter School also tells Fox 4 they are addressing parents' concerns. They sent out the following letter:

Dear parents and guardians,

It is always a terribly sad time when a tragedy happens such as that which occurred in a Connecticut school today. This type of situation leaves everyone uneasy and in some cases, especially with children and parents, it causes a deep fear and concern. Please allow us to reassure you that our schools take every precaution we can to prevent such a tragedy. When your children return from school today, please take some time to remind them to immediately alert adults if they see anything out of the ordinary that causes them any concerns about safety. Some of the safety precautions we take are locking external doors after students are admitted, locking classroom doors, screening visitors at our front desk and conducting a variety of safety drills that include the very unlikely event of an intruder with ill intentions. It is very sad that we must prepare for these types of situations, but in today’s unsettled world, it is a reality we must face. While we cannot guarantee there will never be a situation for which we are not prepared, we promise to do everything in our power to assure the safety and security of your children while you entrust us with their care.
